Fwd: Ice Experiments

We noticed the pool out in the front yard was frozen so we broke it up with a ball peen hammer.  Then we added food coloring, blue, to be exact.  Then it froze again.  Today, we went out there and broke it all up again, and then added purple food coloring with a bunch of red.  We pulled a few pieces out, and also looked at the ice that had frozen inside some toys.  The ice that had been in the pool had air bubbles throughout the ice.  The ice that was formed in a sheet on one of the toy covers had bubbles in it, too.

MrBaby opened the little cooler up all the way and found more ice.  The ice found in the cooler, that had been mostly covered, was clear and free of bubbles.

So our discovery is that either air, or the sun, make bubbles form in ice.  It also could be from the cooler being more static in its temperature, or possibly a lack of air currents.
